Eligibility Criteria for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

To qualify for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships, candidate must fulfill all of the following requirements below:

  • Required Language: English.
  • Eligible Countries: All world countries.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent university degree achieved before 31 July 2022 (degree certificate) recognized by the Swiss university. As a proof, the degree has to be submitted to the Federal Commission for Scholarships before the start of the scholarship.
  • Applicants must be born after 31 December 1987.
  • Applicants who have been in Switzerland since more than one year at the beginning of the scholarship in September are not eligible.
  • Applicants must provide a letter from an academic host professor (including her/his short CV) at the chosen Swiss university confirming why she/he is willing to supervise and support the research. Without such support, the application will be rejected.
  • Applicants must have a research proposal including a time frame. This is the centerpiece of the application. The applicant must devote all required attention to it.
  • Applicants must be in command of the necessary language skills required for the research/studies.
  • Applicants who have already benefited from a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for a second scholarship.
  • Scholarship holders are expected to move to Switzerland during their grant period.

(1) Prepare the following documents:

  1. Completed and signed FCS application (typed and printed) with.
  2. A complete resume including a list of academic papers, honors.
  3. A letter of intent (max. 2 pages).
  4. A thorough study proposal utilizing only the FCS research proposal (maximum 5 pages, signed).
  5. A copy of the letter stating the reasons the selected Swiss university’s academic host professor is willing to supervise and assist the research, together with the professor’s brief CV.
  6. A brief curriculum vitae for the home institution’s academic mentor.
  7. Two private letters of recommendation from two distinct professors who teach in the applicant’s field (use exclusively the FCS reference form – originals in sealed envelopes only for the 1st set). None for the second set.
  8. Copies of certificates, grade reports, and diplomas with grades from previously attended colleges and universities, starting with the most recent. if not, then in English, French, Italian, or German with official authorized translations in English that have been attested. Submit the copies of the certificates instead.
  9. Medical record with signature (use only the FCS health certificate form).
  10. The applicant’s passport in two copies (main page with personal data). Copy of each passport is included for dual nationals.
  11. Candidates who are already present in Switzerland at the time of application must also include a copy of their Swiss residency document.

(2) The application package is available from the Swiss embassy in your country.

(3) Please submit your application materials in the precise sequence listed below, in two sets (one original and one copy). The first set includes the original, duly executed documents as well as the private letters of recommendation and, if necessary, the attested English translations. With the exception of the private letters of recommendation, the second batch is a duplicate of the first (only 1st set). None for the second set.
